Also, make sure that you've grabbed the correct image type of Memtest some are self-extracting, some are just the image. Make sure you have the latest version of Rufus and Memtest. I know that the same motherboard booted off another same make/model USB drive (a 32GB Kingston Data Traveler) just fine when I used it to install Windows 10.įor the record, the error message it gave me was that the ISO image was either non-bootable, or used a boot or compression method not supported by Rufus. I'm going to start over, reformat the USB drive first, THEN see if I can write the bootable image to it using Rufus. The strange part is, if it couldn't boot off of the USB, why didn't it go ahead and boot from the SSD with Windows installed? On another forum I frequent, someone suggested that the failure by my Z170-A motherboard to boot from the drive may be that it has the wrong file system-it may be looking for something formatted in NTFS and it's currently formatted as FAT32.
Thinking back, I realize that I didn't reformat the drive ahead of time, before attempting to write the ISO using Rufus. It just gave me some error message that I can't recall exactly, although if I had to guess I think it's a case of these flash drives that the manufacturers configure such that they look like an external hard disks instead of plain jane USB drives.
